Montmartre Walk

On our last Sunday in Paris we took one more Paris Walk tour, this time in Montmartre.  It was an absolutely gorgeous, sunny day, but freezing. Definitely the coldest day of our stay – we had to be very careful not to slip on the ice all over the streets.

Our guide was an absolutely charming British woman.  She was funny and engaging and very well informed, since she lives in the area.  She gave us tips on the best places to buy bread, pastries, and produce and the best restaurants as well as a history of the area.

Montmartre is far enough from the center of Paris that it has a very distinctive atmosphere – very much like a village.  It was home to Van Gogh, Picasso, and Toulouse Lautrec, among others and still has an artsy feel.  If it weren’t so removed from the rest of Paris it would be a great neighborhood to stay in for awhile.

After the tour we took the guide’s advice and had a great lunch of quiche and salad at a restaurant just down the hill from Sacre Coeur, which was full of French families having Sunday lunch – not a tourist in sight.  Great recommendation!  We then hurried back to the apartment to thaw out.
