La Defense

Saturday was gray and gloomy -- one of the few rainy days we had on our trip.  In the morning we headed down the rue Faubourg St. Antoine to the tiny ravioli shop we remembered from our 2006 visit to buy some fresh ravioli for dinner.  After lunch we decided to take the metro to La Defense, the “modern” area of Paris.  I didn’t have any great expectations for this trip, but I had wanted to see the La Defense arch up close since seeing it from the top of the Arc de Triomphe in 2009.  Surprisinglhy, it turned out to be a fascinating area, and produced some of my favorite pictures of the trip.  Despite the nasty weather we had great fun taking pictures of all the interesting shapes and contrasts provided by the glass buildings and sculptures.  The area was almost entirely deserted, which added to the atmosphere and made for some great photos.

We returned to our warm apartment and a bottle of wine (of course!), a baguette and the delicious fresh ravioli we purchased in the morning. Another great day.
